I remember the time when we got Bangsi. My parents called me and my sister
to our garage. When we entered we could see two puppies inside. We were told
that we could choose one. One of the puppies was very outgoing and was not
afraid to approach us. The other one held rather back and didn't come on his
own. But when I bent down and called him to me he came slowly. When I picked
him up I knew that he was the one we should choose! The next day he was
bathed and given the name, Bangsi (means bear in Icelandic), because he
looked like one.
Bangsi was the perfect dog! He became housetrained in a week and was very quick at learning new things. He was not allowed to go into the living room and he knew that well. Every time he was chasing me or my sister, and we would enter the living room, he would maybe step a few steps inside, then back away and lie down to wait for us.
He was very good in in-call and would come straight away. I often took him to a field near by and play some kind of hide-and-seek with him. He never ran away or got distracted.
When I would come from school and see him in our garden I would whistle a specific tune and he would know that I was coming. He would want to go inside the house to greet me. Then when I came to the door he would lift the post-hatch with his nose and then stick his nose inside and begin sniffing. I always lifted the post-hatch on the other side and poke his nose and then open the window. I was always celebrated like a king!
He had always been shedding a lot but when he became about three years old he became worse. Every time he would go outside he would shiver, even in the summer. The veterinarian didn't know what was wrong and could do nothing for him. As he became worse, the hard decision was taken to put him to sleep.
I remember him still as today as the perfect dog with a giant's heart!
